Amir Cup 2019: Al-Sadd lose to Al-Duhail in the final
Al-Sadd finished as runners-up of the 2019 Amir Cup after a 4-1 defeat to Al-Duhail in the final match played at the Al Wakrah Stadium on Thursday.
Akram Afif gave Al-Sadd an early lead in the 6th minute before Ali Afif equalised for Al-Duhail in the 13th minute. In the second half, Edmilson scored in the 58th minute to make it 2-1 and then substitute Youssef El Arabi scored Al Duhail’s third goal in the 61st minute. Edmilson then scored in the 81st minute to complete the scoring. The match saw Al-Duhail’s Almoez Ali get sent off, while Al-Sadd’s Tarek Salman, Hamed Ismail and Baghdad Bounedjah also got red cards.
Al-Sadd began the match well and got in front in the sixth minute, when Akram Afif finished off Gabi’s back-heeled pass with a first-time shot.
The lead only lasted for seven minutes, as Akram’s brother Ali Afif netted in the 13th minute to equalise for Al-Duhail. The goal came after a defensive error from Al-Sadd, which saw Almoez Ali play the ball through to Ali Afif, whose shot deflected off Abdelkarim and go in.
Both teams had chances after that, before the match came to halt with Almoez’s foul on Bounedjah, which saw him get sent off for a second yellow card.
The first half thus went on to end 1-1. After the restart, Al-Sadd were dealt a blow when they were also reduced to ten men. In the 55th minute, Tarek Salman was the last man when he brought down El Arabi and he was sent off instantly.
In the 58th minute, Edmilson gave Al-Duhail the lead after getting into the box and unleashing a powerful shot past Al-Sadd keeper Saad Al-Dosari. Three minutes later, El Arabi got past his marker and chested in a cross from Edmilson to make it 3-1.
Edmilson then scored Al-Duhail’s fourth goal in the 81st minute, with a shot from outside the box.
