Spirited start

The match began with both teams showing spirit from the start althought neither was allowed any space in midfield to be able to dominate play. In the 9th minute, Al-Sadd chalked out their first chance of the game with Meshaal Al-Shammari sending a header above the Al-Ahli crossbar. The Wolves continued with the pressure; Algerian Jugurtha Hamroun almost put them ahead in the 19th minute with a powerful strike which went just wide of the right post.

Al-Sadd keep up the pressure

The match continued with Al-Sadd keeping up the pressure in the Al-Ahli half, attacking from deep and also from the wings. Hamroun was especially lively, dribbling in from the wings and threatening the Al-Ahli defence. Al-Sadd played with a 4-2-3-1 formation which had a back four of Hamed Ismail, Morteza Pouraliganji, Ibrahim Majid and Abdelkarim Hassan. Pedro and Salem Al-Hajri played in central midfield while Xavi, Meshaal Al-Shammari and Jugurtha Hamroun formed the attacking trio. Hamza Al-Sanhaji played up front as the lone striker.

Wolves attempt to score before haltime

Al-Sadd tried hard to score in the final few minutes of the first half. In the 39th minute, Hamed Ismail penetrated from the right wing, entering the box and shooting but the ball flew past the left post of Amer Al-Dosari. The Saddawi pressure continued but to no avail and the referee then went on to blow his whistle, signalling for haltime with the score 0-0.

No changes at halftime

Al-Sadd went into the second half with the same lineup as in the first. A lively period of play ensued with Al-Ahli trying to put pressure on the Al-Sadd defence early on. In the 50th minute, Al-Ahli’s Mohamed Sayed Adnan struck a powerful shot which deflected off the defence and went out. The Al-Sadd reply came quickly with Abdelkarim’s long through ball which was controlled by Al-Sanhaji but his shot was deflected at the final moment.

Meshaal puts Al-Sadd in the front

In the 56th minute, Al-Sadd took the lead through young attacker Meshaal Al-Shammari who picked up Abdelkarim’s pass and struck a powerful shot which flew past Amer Al-Dosari, making the score 1-0.

Three substitutions for Al-Sadd

Al-Sadd made their first substitution in the 68th minute, taking off goalscorer Meshaal Al-Shammari, who was replaced by Hassan Ahmed. The team continued to search for another goal with Xavi sending in a cross in the 74th minute but there was no one to connect with it. In the 85th minute, Hamroun dribbled through from the left and sent a shot which flew past the left post. Ferreira continued with the changes and brought on Hussam Kamal in place of Hamza Al-Sanhaji in the 87th minute. In the 90th minute, the third and final substitution followed; Hamed Ismail was replaced by Musab Kheder. The referee then went on to blow for full time, signalling a 1-0 win for Al-Sadd.
