VIDEO: Al-Sadd overcome Al-Ahli 2-1 to remain on top of QSL
Al-Sadd remained on top of the Qatar Stars League standings after defeating Al-Ahli 2-1 in the Round 2 game played at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium on Friday. It was the second successive win in the league for the Wolves and raised their points tally to six from two games.
Hassan Al-Haydos gave Al-Sadd the lead in the 22nd minute from the penalty spot. In the 66th minute, Baghdad Bounedjah extended the lead with his third goal of the season before Firmin Mubele reduced the deficit for Al-Ahli with a header in the 77th minute.
Calm & cautious start from both teams
Both teams began the match displaying caution and a period of calm continued for the first quarter of an hour, without any real danger posed by either side. In the 6th minute, Al-Sadd defender Hossam Kamal penetrated from the right but his cross was cleared by the Al-Ahli defence. On the other side, Meshaal Abdullah put his head to a delivery from the corner put the ball went wide of the post.
Al-Haydos opens the scoring
In the 22nd minute, Al-Sadd got the opportunity to break the deadlock when Baghdad Bounedjah was brought down in the box by Johan Benson. The referee pointed to the spot and Hassan Al-Haydos dispatched the penalty to make the score 1-0 to the Wolves. Al-Ahli attempted to get an equalizer and in the 26th minute, the lively Mubele had a shot at goal but saw it hit the post and go out.
Saddawi attempts to score again; Bounedjah hits the post
Al-Sadd continued to look for another goal and in the 40th minute, Jugurtha Hamroun sent in a cross from the left which was met by the head of Baghdad Bounedjah but the ball grazed the right post. The referee signalled two minutes of added time before blowing the whistle for halftime, with Al-Sadd leading 1-0.
Exciting start to the second half
The start of the second half was completely different to the first and saw a lot of excitement with end-to-end play as both sides went on the attack. In the 51st minute, Al-Ahli’s Iranian midfielder Mojtaba Jabbari took a free kick from just outside the box but saw his effort hit the side netting. Al-Sadd made their first change of the match in the 64th minute, bringing on Gaser Yahya in place of Ali Asad.
Bounedjah doubles the lead; Mubele scores for Al-Ahli
Al-Sadd finally got their second goal when Bounedjah scored in the 66th minute. He picked up a pass from Al-Haydos before getting past the keeper and scoring into an empty net. Al-Ahli reduced the deficit in the 77th minute when Mubele headed in from a corner to make the score 2-1.
Pressure from Al-Ahli
Al-Ahli continued to put pressure on the Al-Sadd defence as they looked to grab the equalizer but the Wolves stood firm. In the 80th minute, Jesualdo Ferreira brought on Meshaal Al-Shammari to replace Hamroun. After three minutes of injury time, the referee blew the whistle for full time and Al-Sadd registered a 2-1 victory.
