Ibra scores a stunner as Al-Sadd defeat Al-Kharaitiyat 1-0
Al-Sadd defender Ibrahim Majid scored a world-class goal to give his side an important 1-0 win over Al-Kharaitiyat in the QSL Round 14 match played at the Al-Khor Stadium on Wednesday.
Ibrahim’s 74th minute striker proved to be the difference in a difficult game for the Wolves, who remain in 2nd place in the league table with 34 points.
Calm start
There was a sense of calm from both sides at the beginning of the mtch with neither side posing any real danger in the first quarter of an hour. The match was played out in the middle of the pitch where both teams put in numbers, trying to avoid giving the other any space to move the ball around.
Hamza attempts with a powerful shot
In the 17th minute, Al-Sadd managed their first shot at goal with Hamza Al-Sanhaji sending a powerful strike which was kept out for a corner by Al-Kharaitiyat keeper Ahmed Sufyan. Al-Sadd began the match with a 4-2-3-1 formation that had a back four of Hamed Ismail, Ibrahim Majid, Pedro and Abdelkarim Hassan while Mohammed Kasola and Salem Al-Hajri played in central mdifield. Xavi, Ali Asad and Meshaal Al-Shammari formed the attacking trio with Hamza Al-Sanhaji playing as the lone striker.
Al-Sadd try to score; Ferreira gets sent off
The Wolves kept up their attacking attempts, both from deep and from the wings as they looked to break the deadlock. In the 30th minute, referee Khamis Al-Marri sent Al-Sadd head coach Jesualdo Ferreira into the stands after he protested against a decision of the official. In the 39th minute, Ibrahim Majid dribbled up the pitch, passed the ball around and then almost got onto the end of a through ball from Xavi but keeper Ahmed Sufyan gathered it up just in time. A couple of minutes later, Meshaal Al-Shammari sent in a cross from the right which was met by Hamza but the shot was kept out by the keeper once again. The referee then went on to blow his whistle to signal halftime, with the score at 0-0.
Hassan Ahmed comes on
At the start of the second half, Al-Sadd made their first substitution of the match, bringing on Hassan Ahmed in place of Meshaal Al-Shammari. Hassan played as a second striker with Ali Asad moving in from the left to play as a playmaker. Al-Sadd then went on to up the ante and threaten the Al-Kharaitiyat goal on multiple occasions, using the lively movement of the substitute Hassan.
The post denies Al-Sadd
Al-Sadd almost got in front in the 61st minute when Xavi’s cross was met by the head of Hassan Ahmed but the ball rebounded off the post. Abdelkarim Hassan connected with the rebound and tried to score but the keeper Ahmed Sufyan was once again in the right place to shut him out. Al-Sadd kept up the pressure with Ali Asad then trying a shot from outside the box in the 65th minute, but the ball flew just wide of the left post.
Ferreira brings on youngster Waad
Ferreira’s second change of the match saw youngster Mohammed Waad come on in place of Hamed Ismail, going on to play as left-back with Abdelkarim Hassan advancing to play up front.
Ibra scores with a stunning freekick
Al-Sadd finally made the breakthrough in the 74th minute after they were awarded a free kick from around 30 yards out. Ibrahim Majid stepped up and sent a powerful strike at goal which nestled in the top right corner, giving Al-Sadd the lead. Al-Kharaitiyat tried hard to come back into the match, applying pressure in the final few minutes but Al-Sadd held on to register a 1-0 win.
