Al-Sadd put four past Umm Salal

Al-Sadd notched up a convincing 4-1 win over Umm Salal in their QNB Stars League Round 8 match which was played on Sunday at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium.

The result takes Al-Sadd to the top of the table temporarily with 21 points from 7 wins and 1 loss. After an own goal from Jugurtha Hamroun put them behind, Al-Sadd came back to register the win courtesy strikes from Xavi, Baghdad Bounedjah, Morteza Pouraliganji and eventually Hamroun, who made amends for the first goal.

It was Umm Salal who took the lead in the game when Jugurtha Hamroun scored in his own net in the 9th minute. The Algerian tried to divert a ball to his keeper, but the header went above Saad Al-Dosari and landed in the goal.

After conceding the first goal, Al-Sadd went on the offensive in search of the equaliser. Hassan Al-Haydos had a good chance to do just that in the 30th minute but his shot was deflected out for a corner.

Finally, Al-Sadd managed to find their goal in the 39th minute through their captain Xavi. After getting a free-kick on the edge of the box, the midfield maestro stepped up and curled it in to make the score 1-1.

The teams went into the tunnel with the scores level but Al-Sadd took the initiative early on in the second half.

In the 52nd minute, the referee pointed to the spot and awarded Al-Sadd a penalty after Al-Haydos was brought down in the box by Ali Mohammed. Bounedjah stepped up and converted the spot-kick to give Al-Sadd the 2-1 lead.

Al-Sadd went on to dominate the game thereafter and had chances to increase the lead. Pouraliganji almost made it 3-1 in the 65th minute when he put his head to Hamroun’s cross but the ball went over the crossbar.

Pouraliganji eventually got the goal he craved with another header in the 84th minute, converting a cross by Xavi from the left. A few minutes later, Al-Sadd scored again and this time it was Hamroun who got on the scoresheet. His shot from inside the box rebounded off the crossbar and then deflected in off the goalkeeper to confirm Al-Sadd’s 4-1 win.
