Al-Sadd overcome Al-Sailiya 3-2 to climb to 2nd place

Al-Sadd climbed to second spot in the Qatar Stars League after overcoming Al-Sailiya 3-2 in a thrilling Round 24 match on Saturday at the Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium. The result saw the Wolves overtake El-Jaish and reach second place with 45 points.
It was Al-Sailiya who opened the scoring with Fouzi Ayesh giving them a 2-0 lead through two penalties in the 28th and 44th minutes. Hassan Al-Haydos reduced the deficit for Al-Sadd with a goal at the stroke of halftime before Baghdad Bounedjah netted the equalizer four minutes after the restart. Morteza Pouraliganji then went on to score the winner with a great header in the 70th minute.
Exciting start as Al-Sadd dominate early on
Al-Sadd began the match on a strong note with a number of chances coming its way early on. Ali Asad dribbled through and struck a shot in the fifth minute which was saved by Sailiya keeper Gregory Gomis. Three minutes Pedro had a go with a powerful shot but the ball got deflected out for a corner. The Al-Sadd domination continued but Al-Sailiya had a couple of chances of their own which were not dangerous.
Al-Sailiya take the lead against the run of play
The Wolves dominated playing a 4-2-3-1 system with Pedro, Morteza, Abdelkarim and Musab forming the defence. Nadir Belhadj and Salem Al-Hajri played in central midfield while Xavi, Ali Asad and Al-Haydos played ahead of them in attack with Baghdad Bounedjah as the lone forward. However, Al-Sailiya were able to take the lead against the run of play when Fouzi Ayesh scored a penalty in the 28th minute.
Fouzi adds a second, Al-Haydos reduces the deficit for Al-Sadd
Al-Sadd put pressure on the Sailiya defence going into the end of the first half, trying to find an equalizer. However, it was Fouzi Ayesh who scored again from yet another penalty in the 44th minute, making it 2-0. The penalty was given after a handball by Al-Sadd defender Morteza. Just a minute later, Hassan Al-Haydos made the score 2-1 after dribbling through the Al-Sailiya defence and lobbing the goalkeeper. The referee then blew his whistle for halfime moments later.
Khalfan replaces Belhadj, Baghdad equalizes
Al-Sadd made their first change of the match at the start of the second half with Algerian Nadir Belhadj being replaced by Khalfan Ibrahim. Four minutes into the half, Baghdad Bounedjah headed in a cross from Xavi to level the scores.
Al-Sadd search for a third goal, Morteza finds it
The Wolves kept up the pressure looking for a third goal and in the 66th minute, Musab Khodr dribbled through the right win and sent a cross in, which was met by Baghdad Bounedjah but the shot hit the side netting. Four minutes later, Al-Sadd got their goal. Xavi delivered a corner which was headed in by Morteza to the right of the Sailiya goal, making it 3-2 to Al-Sadd.
Al-Sadd maintain balanced approach, Kasola replaces Asad
Mohammed Kasola came on in the 79th minute to replace Ali Asad and played in central midfield alongside Salem Al-Hajri as Al-Sadd tried to find the right balance in play after scoring the third goal. Al-Sailiya attempted to give a quick reply however, the Al-Sadd defence stood firm with keeper Muhannad Naim doing well. The referee signalled 3 minutes of additional time before whistling for full time, giving Al-Sadd a 3-2 win.
