Al-Sadd drop points after 1-1 draw with Al-Shahaniya

Al-Sadd had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Al-Shahaniya in a difficult matchup between the teams on Thursday evening, during the QSL Round 19 game held at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium.

The result meant that Al-Sadd increased its points tally to 44 and remained in second place in the league table.

Baghdad Bounedjah opened the scoring for Al-Sadd in the 21st minute before Muhannad Adnan equalized for Al-Shahaniya in the 36th minute. Al-Sadd defender Pedro was sent off for a second bookable offence in second half additional time. The referee then went on to show red cards to Al-Sadd’s Ibrahim Majid and Bounedjah alongside Al-Shahaniya’s Nasser Al-Kaabi.

Calm start

Al-Sadd began the match in a calm fashion and did not threaten the Al-Shahaniya goal in the opening minutes. The Wolves did manage to dominate possession by putting numbers in midfield.

Al-Sadd attempts to score; Bounedjah strikes

The Al-Sadd players came up with attempts to break the Al-Shahaniya goals but to no avail until the 20th minute when Baghdad Bounedjah put his head to a cross from Xavi. However, his attempt went over the crossbar. Just a minute later, the Algerian gave his side the lead. Hamid Ismail sent in a cross from the right and Bounedjah headed past Al-Shahaniya keeper Khalifa Al-Dosari to make the score 1-0.

Al-Shahaniya equalize against run of play

While Al-Sadd continued to dominate play, Al-Shahaniya made attempts to attack and in the 36th minute, they equalized against the run of play. Muhannad Adnan was the quickest to react to a loose ball after a defensive mistake from Al-Sadd and he went on to finish past Saad Al-Dosari, making the score 1-1. The score remained the same until the halftime whistle.

Al-Haydos replaces Jasir

At the beginning of the second half, Al-Sadd made their first substitution of the match with Hassan Al-Haydos replacing Jasir Yahya. AL-Sadd went on to attack with fervour from both the wings and also from deep. In the 61st minute, after good passing, Bounedjah managed to cut the ball across for the oncoming Xavi but the Spaniard’s shot flew over the crossbar. Bounedjah almost added a second goal in the 65th minute when he connected acrobatically to Hamza Al-Sanhaji’s cross but he saw his effort tipped away by Khalifa Al-Dosari.

Two changes at once

In the 72nd minute, Jesualdo Ferreira made two changes at once, bringing on Khalfan Ibrahim and Morteza Pouraliganji in place of Hamza Al-Sanhaji and Salem Al-Hajri. Xavi then sent in a cross from the left which was controlled by the keeper before Al-Sadd’s attackers did. Although the Wolves went on the attack in the last few minutes, Al-Shahaniya remained defiant. After the end of additional time, the referee went on to blow for full time, signalling a 1-1 draw.
