03 Jan 2016
Al-Sadd had to go home with a point on Sunday following their 1-1 draw with Umm Salal in the QSL Round 15 match played at the Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium.
The draw meant that Al-Sadd raised their tally to 28 points in the league rankings. Khalfan Ibrahim opened the scoring for Al-Sadd in the 37th minute before Weliton Souza equalized for Umm Salal at the stroke of halftime.
A cautious start
The match began with both sides playing with a bit of caution and it continued for the first ten minutes. There were no clear chances for either team with an increase in midfield presence leaving the attackers unable to make their mark. On 15 minutes, Hassan al-Haydos penetrated from the right and sent a cross in for the oncoming Nadir Belhadj but the Umm Salal defence was able to clear it away at the last moment.
Teams cancel each other out
The proceedings played out in a similar manner for the next quarter of an hour. The teams cancelled each other out with only a few skirmishes in front of either goal. Al-Sadd played with a 3-4-2-1 formation: Kasola, Ibrahim and Abdulrahman Nasser played in defence while Talal al-Baloushi, Gaser Yahya, Belhadj, Hamza al-Sanhaji manned the midfield. Ahead of them was the attacking duo of Khalfan and Al-Haydos and the lone striker Muriqui. In the 30th minute, Ibrahim Majed sent a powerful shot from outside the box which was kept away by Umm Salal keeper Baba Malik with some difficulty.
Khalfan opens the scoring, Wellington equalizes
On 37 minutes, Al-Sadd took the lead. After great linkup play between the trio of Belhadj, Muriqui and Al-Haydos, the ball fell to Khalfan who played a one-two with Al-Haydos before lashing the ball in past Malik. Umm Salal managed to get an equalizer just before halftime. After a freekick floated into the box, Brazilian defender Wellington Souza tapped in from close range to bring scores level at halftime.
Al-Sadd start the second half with no changes to team
The second half began with Al-Sadd making no changes to their team. The Wolves tried hard to put pressure on the Umm Salal defence, attaking from the wings through Belhadj and Al-Haydos and from the deep through Khalfan and Muriqui. In the 50th minute, Hamza al-Sanhaji struck a shot which went over the bar. Eight minutes later, Belhadj sent in a dangerous cross to the 6-yard box which was cleared by the Umm Salal defence.
Saleh Bader enters in place of Gaser Yahya
Jesualdo Ferreira made his first change of the match in the 64th minute when he sent on Saleh Bader in place of Gaser Yahya, to play alongside Talal in the midfield. Al-Sadd continued to put pressure and al-Haydos could have added a second had it not been for an offside call. Al-Sadd then made a second change with Meshaal al-Shammari coming on in place of Abdulrahman Nasser.
Al-Sadd makes attempts but it ends in a draw
Al-Sadd continued to make attempts on goal with the introduction of forward Al-Shammari. In the final few minutes, there were many attacking moves but however none of them ended in a goal. The referee blew his whistle after three minutes of injury time to signal full time and a 1-1 draw between the teams.
