Al-Sadd clinch the Clasico after 5-0 win over Al-Rayyan
Al-Sadd registered a 5-0 victory over Al-Rayyan to clinch the QSL Round 10 match that was held at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium on Wednesday night.
The result meant that Al-Sadd climbed to second spot in the league standings with a tally of 24 points from 10 games.
Baghdad Bounedjah opened the scoring for Al-Sadd from the penalty spot prior to halftime, before adding another goal right after the restart. Xavi Hernandez then netted from a freekick in the 54th minute while Jugurtha Hamroun scored in the 66th minute to make the score 4-0. Bounedjah returned to complete his hattrick and score the final goal of the game in the 73rd minute, giving Al-Sadd the 5-0 victory.
Action packed start
As the match kicked off, both sides wasted no time and went on the attack as the game witnessed a period of end-to-end action. In the 8th minute, the first real chance materialized as Al-Rayyan’s Sebastian Soria sent in a cross but it was deflected out of the pitch. Al-Sadd’s reply came quick; Hamroun took a shot at goal but keeper Omar Barry was on hand to save it. The Algerian then tried to dribble through the Rayyani defence after picking up a pass from Bounedjah but he lost possession in the final moments.
Attempts for both sides
Both sides showed attacking fervour and carved out chances as the first half progressed. Al-Sadd played with a 4-2-3-1 formation that saw a back four of Pedro, Morteza Pouraliganji, Ibrahim Majid and Abdelkarim Hassan. Mohammed Kasola and Salem Al-Hajri formed the midfield pivot while the trio of Xavi, Hassan Al-Haydos and Hamroun provided the attacking impetus behind lone striker Bounedjah. In the 24th minute, Hamroun was once again in the spotlight and attempted a shot which flew over the crossbar.
Two chances in one minute for Al-Sadd
Al-Sadd then wasted two real chances within a minute. First, Hamroun did great work on the right win to dribble through and send in a cross which was met first-time by Baghdad. But he could not connect properly and the ball fell to Al-Haydos who could not finish off the move; his acrobatic shot was saved by Barry. Moments later, Xavi sent in a through ball past the Rayyan defenders towards Al-Haydos but his shot went over the goal.
Al-Sadd score through Bounedjah
Finally, Al-Sadd managed to make the breakthrough in the 43rd minute when Bounedjah slotted home a penalty, which had been awarded after a handball in the box. The referee then went on to blow for halftime, with Al-Sadd leading 1-0.
Bounedjah adds a second
Right after the second half kicked off, Al-Sadd started from where they left off. In the 48th minute, the excellent Hamroun sped down the left wing and sent in a cross which was met by countryman Bounedjah, making the score 2-0 in favour of Al-Sadd.
Xavi scores the third, Hamroun makes it 4-0
Not long after the second, Al-Sadd scored again. Xavi got on the scoresheet with a great freekick from the edge of the box in the 54th minute to net Al-Sadd’s third goal. In the 66th minute, Hamroun picked up a through pass from Xavi before lobbing the keeper to make the score 4-0.
Khalfan, Ali Asad come on; Bounedjah scores the fifth
Al-Sadd went on to make two substitutions bringing on Khalfan Ibrahim in place of Al-Haydos (68′) and then Ali Asad in place of Hamroun (69′). A few minutes later, Bounedjah completed his hattrick by scoring Al-Sadd’s fifth goal; Pedro crossed from the right and the Algerian striker finished with a clinical strike. Al-Sadd went on to dominate the final minutes of the match before the referee signalled for full time and a 5-0 victory for the Wolves.
