Al-Wakrah: Al-Sadd registered another victory in the QNB Stars League after its restart, defeating Al-Ahli 1-0 in their Round 19 clash on Monday at Al Janoub Stadium.

Hassan Al-Haydos scored the lone goal of the game in the 43rd minute, giving Al-Sadd the three points which took their tally to 38. The Wolves remain in third place in the league table.

Al-Sadd came into the game without Akram Afif, who was ruled out with an ankle injury sustained during training, but had Al-Haydos back in the starting lineup for the first time since February.

Early on, Al-Sadd created two great opportunities to score through Baghdad Bounedjah. In the 5th minute, Pedro sent Bounedjah through but the Al-Ahli keeper Ivanildo came out in time to stop the Algerian’s shot. Bounedjah then got past a defender with a fine piece of skill on the left and found himself in good space, but once again he was stopped by the Al-Ahli backline.

Jung Woo-young had a go at goal in the 23rd minute, with a powerful effort from distance, but Ivanildo kept it out. Bounedjah connected with the rebound to put the ball in the net, only for the referee to rule it out for offside. The linesman’s flag also prevented Al-Ahli from scoring, with Hernan Perez’s effort ruled out.

Al-Sadd finally went ahead in the 43rd minute, when Al-Haydos received the ball in midfield and advanced a few steps, before sending a rocket of a strike to the top corner to make it 1-0.

When the match resumed after halftime, Xavi had replaced goalscorer Al-Haydos with new signing Rodrigo Tabata. Al-Sadd then had another effort ruled out for offside in the 58th minute.

Abdelkarim Hassan came on for Bahaa El Leithy in the 60th minute as Al-Sadd’s second substitution, to strengthen the Wolves’ defence in the face of repeated attempts from the Al-Ahli attack, led by Ahmed Akaichi and Nabil El Zhar.

Al-Sadd tried to push forward in search of a second goal, and they thought they had got it in the 84th minute, when Bounedjah bundled the ball in after a great piece of passing play with Nam Tae-hee but once again, the referee disallowed the goal after the linesman deemed Nam to be offside in the buildup.

The match thus ended with just the lone goal in it, as Al-Sadd registered a second successive victory.
