Al-Sadd loses to Lekhwiya in the Sheikh Jassim Cup final

​Al-Sadd failed to defend its Sheikh Jassim Cup title after losing 1-4 to Lekhwiya in the 2016 edition of the event held on Thursday at the Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium.

Lekhwiya opened the scoring through Ismail Mohammed in the 18th minute and their lead lasted until halftime. In the first minute of the second half, they doubled their lead through a goal from Mohammed Razaq. Al-Sadd then reduced the deficit in the 50th minute when Meshaal al-Shammari scored. On 60 minutes, Nam Tae Haee made it 3-1 from the penalty spot before Vladimir Weiss scored the fourth for Lekhwiya with a solo effort in the 87th minute.

A cautious start

The match started with both sides showing a bit of caution. It continued for the first ten minutes before there was any sign of danger at either goal. In the 15th minute, Al-Sadd almost took the lead but the post denied them. After a free kick from Xavi, the ball fell at the feet of Nadir Belhadj whose shot rebounded off the post.

Ismail opens the scoring for Lekhwiya

In the 18th minute, Lekhwiya winger Ismail Mohammed scored the first goal of the game after converting Youssef Msakni’s squared pass from the left. Al-Sadd tried to respond after falling behind but Lekhwiya had the upper hand, spreading out well in midfield and defence.

Al-Sadd attempts without causing danger

Al-Sadd continued to make attempts on the Lekhwiya goal, attacking from the wings and also from deep but the Lekhwiya defence stood firm. In the 40th minute, Belhadj penetrated from the left and sent in a cross which was cleared by the Lekhwiya defender. The referee signalled one minute of additional time amidst continuing attempts by Al-Sadd. The Wolves however failed to score before the whistle and the teams went off the pitch with Lekhwiya leading 1-0.

Lekhwiya double the lead, Meshaal reduces the deficit

With the beginning of the second half, Lekhwiya were able to quickly score their second goal. In the 46th minute, substitute Mohammed Razaq was able to finish past Saad al-Dosari to double the lead for his team. Four minutes later, Al-Sadd pulled one goal back through a substitute of their own. Young striker Meshaal al-Shammari sent a powerful shot into the net after being put through by a great pass from Xavi.

Nam makes it 3-1, Weiss scores the fourth

In the 60th minute, the referee Salman Falahi awarded a penalty to Lekhwiya after Ibrahim Majid was adjudged to have fouled Chico Flores in the box. Korean midfielder Nam Tae Hee converted the spotkick and made the score 3-1 for Lekhwiya. Al-Sadd tried hard to get back into the game amidst cautious defending from Lekhwiya. On 78 minutes, Hassan al-Haydos sent a cross from the right which was met by first time by Xavi but the shot went above the Lekhwiya crossbar. In the 87th minute, Vladimir Weiss scored the final goal of the night after a solo effort, making the score 4-1. A few minutes later, the referee blew his whistle, signalling the win for Lekhwiya.
